ŽELEZNIČKO NASLEĐE NA PRUGAMA BANATA

Apstrakt. Razvoj železnice u Banatu obuhvata dva perioda.

RAILWAY HERITAGE OF BANAT

Abstract. The railway network development in Banat can be divided into two distinct periods. The first period, which lasted until the middle of the First World War, was under Austro-Hungarian rule when the most significant part of the current Banat railway network was built. The second phase of railway development began after the establishment of Yugoslavia following the war. At that time, the existing railway network in Yugoslavia, and now Serbia, was expanded by the construction of several more railways. The change in traffic trends has dramatically reduced the share of railways in public transport. That is why most Banat railways have been closed in the last decades, and the railway infrastructure and facilities have been abandoned and remain unprotected. In this article, we present part of the results of our project, “Technical and Architectural Heritage on the Railways of Vojvodina - Banat”. Following the Banat railways, the project aimed to identify and document the existing railway heritage that is sometimes more than 120 years old.

Key words: Serbian railways, Banat, railway history, railway infrastructure, industrial heritage.
